Ukraine: Flexible Aid Compounds on the Ukrainian Border
Supporting Ukrainian Refugees on the Poland Border Providing immediate psychosocial support and technical infrastructure for Ukrainian refugees through mobile assistance compounds and community-led construction. This initiative empowers women and children by improving their daily living conditions and fostering long-term resilience.
Since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, millions of refugees—primarily women and children—have sought safety in Poland, often residing in overcrowded "Refugee Shelters" converted from old industrial or office buildings. Engineers Without Borders - Israel (EWB-IL) addresses this crisis by deploying "Flexible Compounds"—mobile assistance units that provide a sanctuary from the chaos of transit camps like Tesco in Przemyśl. These compounds offer quiet spaces for professional psychosocial counseling, creative libraries, and play areas, ensuring that displaced families have the emotional support and privacy needed for recovery.
The project further emphasizes long-term community empowerment by involving residents in the renovation of their own living environments. In residential shelters like the "Yellow House" and "Green House," EWB-IL works alongside women and youth to build weather-protected playgrounds and community greenhouses, which improve nutrition while fostering a sense of self-efficacy. This collaborative approach extends beyond physical infrastructure to include IT training and leadership development, equipping refugees with professional skills to help them overcome language barriers and build a resilient future.
